	Die SIKU Geschichte / The SIKU Story

Die Ursprünge

1921 wurde das Unternehmen 'Sieper-Werke'[ext. Link] von Richard Sieper in Lüden-scheid/Sauerland gegründet. Dort wurden Konsumgüter wie zum Beispiel Aluminium-Bestecke, Aschenbecher und Koppelschlösser produziert. Aber auch Produkte aus neuartigen thermoplastischen Kunststoffen.

1943 wurde die Produktionsstätte in Hilchen-bach/Siegerland erweitert, dem heutigen Sitz der Sieper-Werke. Konsumgüter und technische Produkte aus Kunststoff, Kleinmöbel, und Spiegelschränke wurden dort entwickelt und produziert.

In Lüdenscheid wurden zu der Zeit Werbeartikel für grosse Marken (z.B. ‘Elefantenschuh’ und ‘Zeller schwarze Katz’) im Spritzgussverfahren hergestellt.

The Origins

The company 'Sieper-Werke'[ext. Link] was founded by Richard Sieper in 1921 at Lüdenscheid in Germany. There consumer products like cutlery made of aluminium, ashtrays and belt buckles were produced. But also products made of novel thermoplastic material.

In 1943 the factory in Hilchenbach was extended which is now the headquarter of the Sieper company. There consumer products and technical products made of plastics, occasional furniture and mirror cabinets were developed and produced.

At the same time in Lüdenscheid promotional items for famous brands were made using die-casting methods. For example: ‘Elefantenschuh’ (shoes) and ‘Zeller schwarze Katz’ (wine).

Die Marke SIKU entsteht

1950 wurde das Markenzeichen ‘SIKU’ angemeldet. Es setzt sich aus den Anfangsbuchstaben von ‘Sieper Kunststoffe’ ab. Im selben Jahr war SIKU mit Spielwaren aus Kunststoff (z.B. einem Bauernhof mit Tieren) auf der ersten Spielwarenmesse in Nürnberg vertreten.

Das Spielzeug-Sortiment wurde weiter entwickelt und 1951 erschienen die ersten Spielzeugautos. Mit diesem Sortiment unterschied sich SIKU deutlich von anderen Herstellern, da damals hauptsächlich Blechspielzeug angeboten wurde.

The brand SIKU arises

In 1950 the brand ‘SIKU’ was registered. It is composed of the first letters of ‘Sieper Kunststoffe’ (Sieper Plastics). In the same year SIKU presented toys made of plastics (e.g. a farm with animals) at the first toy fair at Nuremberg.

The range of toys was further extended and in 1951 the first toy cars were presented. With that range SIKU was very different from other manufacturers because at that time mostly toys made of plate were produced.

Ein ungewöhnlicher Maßstab

1955 wurden die ersten Automodelle im Maßstab 1:60 unter dem Namen ‘Verkehrsmodelle’ vorgestellt. Dieser Maßstab vereinte mehrere Vorteile: spielgerechte Grösse, die Möglichkeit, technische Funktionen wiedergeben zu können und preisgünstige Produktion. Mit der Wahl dieses Maßstabs unterschied sich SIKU von vielen anderen Herstellern, die den Modellbahn-Maßstab H0 (1:87) gewählt hatten.

In den folgenden Jahren erschienen jeweils etwa 15 neue Modelle und ein umfangreiches Zubehörprogramm, bestehend aus Verkehrszeichen, Strassenplänen, Gebäuden, usw.

An unusual scale

In 1955 the first toy cars in scale 1/60 were presented with the name ‘Verkehrsmodelle’ (traffic models). This scale combined several advantages: The size was appropriate for children, the possibility to add technical functions to the models and the possibility to produce the models in a cheap way. With the choice of that scale SIKU was different from other companies which choose the model railway scale H0 (1/87).

During the following years about 15 new models per year and a huge range of accessories like traffic signs, street plans and buildings were presented.

Flugzeugmodelle nur für wenige Jahre

Von 1959 bis 1965 wurde parallel zu den Verkehrsmodellen eine Serie mit Flugzeugmodellen und Zubehör im Maßstab 1:250 angeboten.

Airplane models just for a few years

In the years 1959 to 1965 SIKU produced models of airplanes and accessoires in scale 1/250 as well.

Umstellung auf Zinkdruckguss

In den 60er Jahren drangen die englischen Modellautos aus Metall auf den Markt und bedrohten viele Modellautohersteller. SIKU entschloss sich, seine Produktion auch auf Zinkdruckguss umzustellen.

Im Januar 1963 wurden die ersten SIKU Metallautos ausgeliefert, zunächst zwölf, 1964 bereits schon 32 Typen und erstmals auch LKWs. Die Kunststoffautos wurden parallel dazu bis 1968 angeboten. 1969 bestand das Sortiment dann nur noch aus Metallautos, damals etwa hundert verschiedene Typen. Heute umfasst das Angebot 250 Modelle.

Change to die-cast

In the 1960s the English toy cars made of metal came to Germany and threatened many of the German toy car companies. SIKU decided to change the production to die-cast.

In January 1963 the first twelve SIKU die-cast models were delivered to the shops. In 1965 there were already 32 models available, among them trucks for the first time. Until 1968 the toy cars made of plastic were available too, but in 1969 the whole assortment was changed to die-cast. At that time the range consisted of about 100 models, nowadays there are 250 models.

Die 1970er Jahre

In den 70er Jahren bemühte man sich bei SIKU mit Erfolg, die Spielmöglichkeiten der Modelle zu erhöhen. Dies erreichte man zum Beispiel mit LKWs, die mit Einzelteilen einer Garage oder einer Tankstelle beladen waren.

1972 wurde das Sortiment auf den Maßstab 1:55 umgestellt.

The 1970s

In the 1970s SIKU successfully tried to add more functions to their products. They produced for example trucks with garage parts as freight.

In 1972 the range was changed to scale 1/55.

SIKU Farmer - Eine erfolgreiche Serie

Seit 1983 gibt es die SIKU Farmer-Serie mit Modellen von landwirtschaftlichen Fahrzeugen im Maßstab 1:32. Sie entwickelte sich in den Folgejahren zu einem der wichtigsten SIKU-Sortimente.

SIKU Farmer - A successful series

Since 1983 there is the SIKU Farmer Series with models of agricultural vehicles. This series became the most important one during the following years.

Übernahme von Wiking

1984 übernimmt die Sieper Grupp die Berliner Firma Wiking Modellbau [ext. Link] , die hochwertige Modellautos aus Kunststoff in den Maßstäben 1:87 und 1:160 herstellt. (Siehe auch: ‘Die Wiking-Geschichte’.)

Aquisition of Wiking

In 1984 the Siper Group took over the company Wiking Modellbau [ext. Link] in Berlin which produces high-quality plastic models in scale 1/87 and 1/160.

Platz für 27 Mio. Modellautos

1994/95 wird ein neues Logistikzentrum in Lüdenscheid gebaut. Es bietet ist 25 m hoch und bietet Platz für 27 Mio. SIKU PKWs oder drei Mio. SIKU Traktoren.

Room for 27 million model cars

In 1994/95 a new logistic center was built in Lüdenscheid. It is 2 meters high and has room for 27 million SIKU cars or three million tractors.

Serienerweiterung

1998 wurde die Serie SIKU-Junior vorgestellt. Sie beinhaltet hochwertige Modelle aus Kunststoff.

2002 startete die erfolgreiche Serie FARMERCLASSIC mit historischen Traktor-Modellen im Maßstab 1:32.

2004 wurden gleich drei neue Serien aufgelegt: FARMER+, FARMERCLASSIC+ und SIKUCONTROL.

Die FARMER+ Serie beinhaltet drucktechnisch und farblich veredelte Traktor-Modelle im Maßstab 1:32, während die FARMERCLASSIC+ Serie optisch künstlich gealterte Oldtimer Traktor-Modelle beinhaltet.

SIKUCONTROL-Modelle sind per Funk steuerbare Traktormodelle, die mit allen FARMER Anhängermodellen und Anbaugeräten kombiniert werden kann.

Extension of the ranges

In 1988 the SIKU-Junior series was presented. It consists of high-quality plastic models.

The successful series FARMERCLASSIC with models of historic tractors in scale 1/32 was started in 2002.

In 2004 three new series were presented: FARMER+, FARMERCLASSIC+ and SIKUCONTROL.

The FARMER+ series consists of refined tractor models in scale 1/32, the FARMERCLASSIC+ series consists of oldtimer tractor models which were aged by paint.

SIKUCONTROL models are radio controlled tractor models which can be combined with all FARMER trailers and accessory equipment.

Oldtimer Feuerwehr-Modelle

Seit 2005 wird die Serie SUPERCLASSIC mit Modellen von historischen Feuerwehrfahrzeugen im Maßstab 1:50 angeboten. (Siehe hierzu auch in der Galerie die Bilder des SUPERCLASSIC-Modells Nr. 4114 ‘Siku Magirus Mercur 25 Drehleiter’.)

Oldtimer Fire Brigade Models

Since 2005 the SUPERCLASSIC series with models of historic fire brigade vehicles in scale 1/50 is offered. (See also the pictures of the SUPERCLASSIC model no. 4114 ‘Siku Magirus Mercur 25 Turntable Ladder’ in the gallery.)
